UK: English megaliths linked to death rites

Nine megaliths in a remote part of Dartmoor, England, share features in common with Stonehenge, and may shed light on the meaning behind these prehistoric stone monuments, according to a report in the latest issue of British Archaeology.
The Dartmoor megaliths, which were recently carbon-dated to around 3500 B.C., could predate Stonehenge, but both sites feature large standing stones that are aligned to mark the rising of the midsummer sun and the setting of the midwinter sun. Yet another Dartmoor stone monument, called Drizzlecombe, shares the same orientation.

UK: Mass grave contains remains of executed Viking warriors, Dorset

The captives, all well built young men in their late teens and early 20s, were herded to the place of execution. Fifty-four in total, their heads were hacked off and stacked neatly in a pile. The bodies were tossed into a pit where they remained a tangle of limbs and headless torsos until archaeologists following the route of a new road stumbled across the remains last year.

UK: Urn X-ray picks up Roman remains, Devon

THE Romans had something to declare at Exeter Airport – 2,000 years after they arrived in Devon.
Passing through customs was a very old pot that the visitors had left behind during their stay in the county some time in the mid-70s AD.
The black-burnished urn was dug up during an archaeological dig in Cullompton and since then everyone has been wondering what was in it.

UK: Roman skeleton discovered in Sleaford, Lincolnshire

Buried deep under the ground for centuries, a long-forgotten Roman skeleton has been unearthed in Lincolnshire.
The skeleton, whose age and gender remain a mystery, was uncovered during a dig at The Hoplands in Sleaford.
Little is known about the ancient figure other than the fact it was buried face down and was discovered with a plethora of other Roman items.
Wells, walls and a Roman Road were all uncovered in the vicinity of the bones, creating the picture of a thriving Roman community.
